Head orientation to find the voices you want to hear

In noisy conversations, smartglasses need to know which direction the wearer is listening. HALo infers these acoustic zones of interest from head movement sensed by the glasses’ IMUs. Knowing how many partners are present improves accuracy by 21%, and a companion model, CoCo, estimates that number from IMU data alone.

Acoustic feedback management on open-ear hearing devices

Open-ear glasses and hearing aids can whistle when the loudspeaker is picked up by the microphones. This application combines adaptive feedback cancellers on each microphone, a beamformer and phase shifting, so the device can amplify the talker without howling.

Hands-free control of smart glasses with teeth clicks

STEALTHsense detects single and double teeth clicks with accelerometers in the nose pads. A compact neural network with about 88K parameters reaches 0.93 balanced accuracy on unseen users, and stays reliable around speech, chewing and noise.

Sound-induced vibrations of the pinna and head-related transfer functions

Simulated HRTFs normally treat the outer ear as rigid, but the real pinna is an elastic body that vibrates in a sound field. High-speed holographic interferometry measures those vibration patterns on an artificial pinna. Finite element simulations on a B&K 5128 head and torso model then show how the vibrations change HRTF magnitudes.

Reducing ear-canal feedback in a laser-driven hearing aid

Placing the microphone behind the ear limits feedback but loses the high-frequency pinna cues needed for localization, a common source of complaints about hearing aids. This work tests two strategies to reduce feedback pressure in a wide-bandwidth, light-activated contact hearing aid, which raises its maximum stable gain.

Shape and sound-induced motion of the chinchilla eardrum

Holographic interferometry with two laser wavelengths gives the 3D shape of the tympanic membrane. Stroboscopic measurements then capture its vibration at over 250,000 points. Combining shape and motion separates out-of-plane movement from smaller in-plane components.
